As i get older i have to deal with adults all day everyday. Not that i really hate getting older or anything but its hard to work and live in the "real" world. By the "real" world i mean outside of the comfort of the punk scene. I have come to realize that 80% of all older dudes are fucking disgusting and assume i am too just because i am geting older and am "normal".

I am NOT a "normal" person
I DONT want to talk about "pussy" or "bitches" or "chicks"
I DONT want a beer or go to bars or eat a fucking steak (obviuosly doesnt apply to everyone)
I DIDNT watch the game last night
I DONT want to hear your racist opinions

I AM A FUCKING PUNK. IM NOT LIKE YOU.

Im really just venting in this thread about my co-workers and people i meet on the street that assume that i think the same way that they do. i know im not the only one that has to deal with this and i know that some older people dont just think about "pussy". what really sucks about this stuff is that most of these people are really nice people or just being friendly. but here is a thread for you, as a dude, to vent about shit like this because its hard to deal with sometimes.

Yep. Not quite in that situation, but have to deal with RU students all the time. RU students whose only idea of a good time is to get drunk and smoke weed. It's pretty sad.

I really wish the people in this town would challenge themselves more. It seems like everyone just takes an easy way out and expects nothing more from life.

Yes, they certainly are, but as the franchise has been saying since they came to town in '62:

you gotta believe.

EDIT Back on topic: I see where Jake is coming from, Having worked at the same place with him this summer. I find that this type of attitude never changes. I've been dealing with it since like, 7th Grade.

I'm not as connected to the Punk lifestyle as Jake is. I'm not as "experienced" so to say, as he is, so the "Punks growing older" thing I cant empathize with yet. I mean down get me wrong, It's with me for life, and I've never made a conscious effort to be a "Punk", it just naturally happened. I've just always had certain goals for myself that could be considered "normal" (Masters degree, Career etc.). and I've always felt a drive to work especially hard to try and achieve them. because of this, I've always felt that I've been grounded in reality. and as much as I abhor the "dude" mentality, I feel I have come to learn to ignore it, or even counteract it with absurdism when it becomes overbearing (thats just my nature I guess) because it is something that will never go away, no matter how much I try and co-opt it.

Honestly, it's not just a guy problem. As a girl, I have to deal with the flipside of this- trying to make conversation with girls who only want to talk about how they got a new fake ID and got into some bar where they got totally wasted and hooked up with some super cute guy who never called her back and blablabla.
A lot of these girls really don't seem to have anything to talk about except for going out clubbing (in their cute new outfits!!!!), how trashed they got (before, during or after), and the guys they met (and how things continued after that night)...it's kind of sickening.

Edit- And yup, a lot of people assume I'm a lesbian because I never contribute to these discussions, in addition to blablabla boys blablabla manicures blablabla shoes.

punk as an ideology is a counterculture, if you live the lifestyle this is just something that you are going to have to accept.  I deal with people all the time that have nothing more to offer than tits or sports, and even then all I do is try and relate (even if it is in the most insincere and shallow manner).  Its not even worth it to despair about the bullshit existence that 80% of men and women lead; when you find yourself drawn into a conversation or situation such as jake described its best to just take it with a grain of salt and realize that these people will never understand.  I quietly smirk at them in my head as I acknowledge the fact that they will spend all of their lives drooling over the spectacle that is capitalist brainwashing whilst I maintain and develop an existence based on completely different values.

I'm just gonna throw this in here even though it's not really my place.

Every person can relate to another if they try. Shallow conversation (tits and sports?) are frequent. I've encountered plenty of this kind of conversation from both sexes. But I think if you honestly try to engage people and express your opinion, you'll gain respect. At my work, I stood up to my coworkers and explained that I don't drink and I don't do drugs. I gained a ton of respect and it opened up the conversation to real topics about drug abuse and related topics. If you really don't have a problem with these people personally, I think you'll find that opening up conversation and trying to discuss something real will more often pleasantly surprise you than disappoint or frustrate. I can't tell you how many times I've thought girls were dismissible as 'party chicks' and then had them really surprise me in an intelligent conversation. What I'm trying to say is, don't write people off. It's worth it to give them a shot. You may be coming from a punk perspective, but there's still a common ground that can easily be found

As i go to shows i have to deal with subcultures all the time. Not that i really hate going to shows or anything but its hard to work and live in the "underground" world. By the "underground" world i mean outside of the comfort of regular society. I have come to realize that 80% of all punks are fucking tools and assume i am too just because i am geting older and am "at the show".

I am NOT a "punk"
I DONT want to talk about "dietary choices" or "straightedge" or "your problems"
I DONT want a stupid costume or go see morons preach or swallow fucking trends with a smile on my face
I DIDNT see the punkrawk flavor of the month last night
I DONT want to hear your stupid opinions

I realize that it sounds like a direct attack on cloth, but it wasn't.

I just saw a post that read like a photonegative of some of my sentiments and played mad-libs with it.

Either way, I figured it'd be okay to throw my opinion up there for postings sake...

there are too many racist, sexist, jock punks for me to really be able to contribute anything to this thread. it just makes me think about the fights i get in with my dad when he randomly tries to say that puerto ricans are illegal immigrants and then gets defensive and calls me a college liberal. i won't even get into how mad he got when i brought up how it's actually a US territory.

I agree with some of everything here.  I'm not the type of person to really call myself a "punk" exactly, mostly because that's just another world to get wrapped up in where people expect some sort of uniform code from you.  Well sometimes it does anyway. But at the same time  I like how in your face it can be.  It's an outlet.

More recently I've been becoming more open to different music and different people, because everyone has something in common.  On a rare occurrence,  I meet someone (like one person I work with) who I think is a total jerk in all ways contending.

I see most people, including myself, as just good people who more or less fall victim to social norms.

In terms of growing up, its a two way street.  A lot of people get older and calm down and get smarter, and a lot of people get older and calm down and assimilate into the normal" world and get boring.

I don't even have any idea what the fuck I'm talking about, except that I agree and disagree with everything.

Shit.

I personally identify as a punk because I get to decide what I think punk is. Or, more so, what it is to me. I feel like identifying as a punk doesn't really involve the way I feel about how some people act though.

When I meet people I always give them a chance, and when I meet people I know I'm going to have to spend extended periods of time with, I tend to give them a bigger chance since I'd rather just deal with it then make a big deal about disliking them. A lot of people I know, for example, I go to school, talk about some things in a way that make me really uncomfortable, about women being the biggest example. I tell them, in some times ways harsher then others, that I think they're being an idiot, but I also accept that chances are they aren't going to change. Gotta just deal with it.
