It's amazing how completely out of touch I am with punk/hardcore after the late 90's. It's like Refused broke up and I just stopped paying attention. All my favorite punks bands tend to be from the 70's or 80's hardcore. Even the newer punk stuff I like tends to be bands that have just been around forever.

no particular order, just like everyone else

hold steady - heaven is whenever
world/inferno - hallowmas 7 inch
sharon jones and the dap kings - i learned the hard way
cee lo green - the ladykiller
troops of tomorrow - TWWL 7 inch

i still haven't listened to luck and courage, which i expect to fix soon, but, otherwise, i didn't really pay attention to new music this year.  i went through familiarizing myself with the entire tom waits catalogue and important older punk bands that i had skipped.

Do you guys really like the album Ladykiller? I thought it was pretty weak except for Fuck You obviously. But I guess that song is so good it can carry the entire album.

I did like the record overall. It's not really a great record, but as Vass rightly pointed out, this was a WEAK year for music. On my list the every record is at least a 6/10, that was the qualification.

Johnny Miles gets a 7.5
Paul Weller gets a 7.5
Cee-Lo barely gets a 6
Joanna Newsom gets a 8.5
Elvis Costello gets a 6.5
Laurie Anderson gets a 7
Superchunk gets a 6.5
Franz Nicolay gets a 7.5
Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse gets a 6
Willie Nelson gets a 6.5
Johnny Cash gets a 6
Jack Rose gets a 7.5
Abe Vigoda gets  6
Kanye West gets a 9

By that rating system I'd say very good to great means 8 or above, meaning I'd say only Joanna Newsom and Kanye put out what I would consider great records this year. Which is really sad.

Gaslight Anthem are like a shittier/more commercial version of the Ratchets. But then again Gaslight, Hold Steady, and even the Ratchets (though I really enjoy a few of their songs)

And frankly, I'm tired of all these bands tapping into (i.e., ripping off) Springsteen and trying to install themselves in that progeny. Springsteen was like a forest fire that consumed arenas and stadiums and purged them of overbloated arena rock a la Kiss at least for ONE fucking night. He was a revolution/revelation. He did it. No one has even come close to doing it better. Stop trying and get off the man's jock. He has his legacy and being a poor man's Springsteen (or a poor man's anything) isn't exactly an admirable or desirable legacy to carry.

Gaslight Anthem has been a guilty pleasure of mine for a good part of the year.  I tried not to like them for a while and it just didn't work out. and for the record, they do a rip off other people as well.

Anyway, topic at hand:
New Kings of Nuthin'-best album.

Other ones in my book:
Fake Problems-Real Ghosts Caught On Tape
AM!-White Crosses
The Flatliners-Calvacade
The Dreadnoughts-Polka Never Dies
The Slackers-Great Rocksteady Swindle
Gogol Bordello-Trans-Continental Hustle (sue me)
Less Than Jake-TV/EP
Jesse Minute-Shut Up and Play

I'll throw The Promise in there, but I think the whole shabang adds a lot more than just the pure audio.

not the best year for new music, for me.

i recently realized that i like the new against me! record in the same way i like two and a half men - i realize both are terrible, but they are both catchy/funny in the most 'lowest common denominator' way. the tv show revolves around the same inane jokes that you always see coming but still laugh at, and the band uses the same generic pop hook in every song that you've heard a million times but still gets stuck in your head.

the ex's latest was disappointing, mainly due to the new singer.

uz jsme doma put out a good record this year, but i only discovered them a couple months ago so all of their records were new to me, and some of the older ones are much better.

i want to say last year was a better year for music, but now that i think about it, i didn't make much of an effort to listen to new material from bands that i didn't know. these are just releases from bands i already know and love. i want to change that!
