Electronic house dance music mixing elements of swing. A board lurker informs me that its big in dance clubs in Europe. How long til the steampunkers over here in the States start DJ'ing this stuff? Has it happened already? Will this make steampunk more or less tolerable?

That's the scariest image I've ever imagined.  The steampunk guy and the juggalette would be like the futurama where they go to the amazon planet. The other way around is just too horrifiying for words.

Awwwwww, I love this sorta music! You know I used to be a rave kid right? I can totally imagine combination candy skipping/charleston dancing and just fucking RIPPING THE DANCEFLOOR APART.

GAAAAAAAH SHEEEEEEET! This is so good! I love the horns! I love the bass! I love the trippy techno "unst-unst-unst-zap-zap-zap" noises! Shit! Wanna dance wanna dance right now!

I'm digging it! Although, I wouldn't call it steampunk. I'd say something more like dieselpunk.

I'm actually kind of digging these, but agree that they're more diesel than steam. Really makes me wish I could swing dance better, or at least Charleston. (I fail utterly as a try-hard flapper wannabe!)

I really like the last one, it kinda reminds me of the awesomeness that is the "Belleville Rendezvous"

in a by the way comment 3 different people from vastly different scenes have asked me what steam punk is this week.  One of them said they saw it on a cheesey tv detective show.

I know, why am i posting? going back to sleep.

Y'all may want to check out a remix album on on Impulse records called Impulsive.  If you like this.

There are a couple of other albums out there like this, but I can't think of their names at the moment.

Also, the Foetus album/era Jack mentioned is found on York, which is a fine piece of audiophonics.

In the early 90s there was some band called Course of Empire, kind of an early nu-metal, that mixed a song called "Infested" with Benny Goodman. I got the EP for that song, which was awesome. The others were kind of forgettable.  I lost the CD so I haven't heard it in a long time.

As for JG Thirwell of Foetus, I think he's still doing his Steroid Maximus thing. He did a Steroid Maximus performance last year or so at least.  And he's been working on Venture Brothers music, of course.

Steroid Maximus - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88vJdgfa3VM

Anyway, I dug the Parov Stelar song. The first Yolando song was meh. The second one I liked more, but that might just be because Cement Mixer is a good song.  Here is the original.

Caravan Palace was just not for me. Seems like a parody. Actually, I think it reminds me of Moulin Rouge.

No, but I wish I had. I thought I was just cranky, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that's shy steampunk annoys me.

youre not just cranky.  i do like some of the aesthetic.  brass and wood and mechanics.  i like seeing electronics modded into that form factor.  but this sums it up on the whole.

Its much more interesting as a visual aesthetic than a cultural movement or basis for fiction.

Sums it up perfectly. I like some of it as an aesthetic or fashion statement.

It has been quite popular in Europe for well about a year or so... At least in Germany. I usually dont like the Elctro stuff, but some things are quite nice, i can give you the "best of Electroswing" a friend of mine made:

Benny Berigan:

And alittle bit different, but a really great Swedish Band Movits! With a Songtitle nobody can pronounce... And a nice video.

I used to do the Charleston to this song when my brother and I would watch Star Wars as kids. He usually had to throw a few pillows to get me to stop.

I would probably like this if it wasn't so repetitive and the drumming/beats weren't so obnoxious. Otherwise, it's okay.

Y'know... I was somehow previously oblivious to this subgenre. Utterly oblivious. I don't know how... because I am still stuck in the swing revival. For serious, I cannot get enough of the stuff. Squirrel Nut Zippers, Voodoo Daddy, Atomic Fireballs... and this excellent newer swing/ska band called Black Cat Zoot.

Now that I know of this subgenre, I will probably be tapping my toes to it. Although... this certainly explains why I liked the Idlewild soundtrack so much. Hmm. I guess I have been previously aware of this subgenre.

edit: Cheers to your esoteric wisdom, Mr. Cashman.

Ha. I am honestly laughing out loud at this very moment . Ha. Ha ha. I am honestly laughing out loud at this very moment .

Like Strange Days? And Johnny Mnemonic? (Did I spell that last one right?)

Like The Crow? And Strange Days? Ahhhh, cyberpunk. Y'know, for a guy who prefers older punk, I find myself strangely drawn to cyberpunk. And the Strange Days soundtrack. And the Hackers soundtrack.

And Faith No More. For they were prophets of the future.

What about Strange Days?

the caravan palace video started out seeming like its gonna be kinda lame but then really picked up and made me want to dance along. looking more into them now.

fun fact from their wiki: "The group formed in 2005 after three of the band members were hired by a film production company to provide the soundtrack to silent pornographic movies."
