So at my job there is an excess of what i guess is being called "e-waste" these days (unused electronics).  My aunt (my boss) has instructed me to procure information on the most socially conscious/environmentally friendly way to dispose of this stuff.  Most of it can be reused, so i plan on finding places to donate it and the rest will be disposed via some sort of eco-friendly recycling.  Here's where you guys come in:

In my searching for places to do such things, i have only found green movement solutions.  Now, liberals green movement solutions aren't neccessarily wrong, but they're not neccessarily right either.  So, if any of you...farther left...individuals could direct me as to places where a.) the recycling can be efficiently accomplished and b.) the worthy places to donate them, that'd be wonderful.  Thank you!

Edit:  I should clarify that, for the recycling bit, it'd need to be local because bringing it somewhere only to have them ship it overseas, emitting pollution and having it be dissembled by slave workers in hazardous conditions, kinda defeats the purpose.

Nick if you have any cassette decks or duplicators, I'll take, and use them. Sometimes the best way to recycle something unwanted is find someone who wants it. What exactly is it you need to get rid of? Computer stuff? A/V stuff?

Computers, monitors, telephones, a television (i think), a mini refrigerator and some assorted smaller items that i'm not too aware of at the moment.  No musical devices.

The only true way to recycle them is to find other uses for them as they are now in their current state or give them away/sell them.

I don't know if you heard, but most recycling is a scam.

Well no shit on all accounts...

However, the problem lies in that some of the stuff is broken/unusable.  Who the hell is going to take junk that doesn't work?  Obviously, as i stated, we're donating/giving away what can be reused again.  I may be against most cases of recycling, but if i'm forced into doing, i'd like to do it as responsibly as possible.

I don't know if you heard, but not every scam is avoidable.

Edit:  Hayley, it's yours.

Still working as far as we know.  I tried to give it to Sarah the other week but her college won't take it.

The only problem is that it's been sitting in a moldy and mildew basement for a couple years now.  But there's only a small amount of mold on the outside that can be easily cleaned (i might even do that if i get bored) and i'll test out it's working condition before giving it to you.

Shouldn't be a problem.  It's only a small amount on the side of it.  Like i said, i might even do that myself, depending on if i'm ordered to and/or am bored enough to do so.

It's a pretty big sized mini fridge though, just so you know.

Dude, I know. I'm just saying that any electronics recycling place will probably be as legit as you can get.

recycling electronics, as little as they can be recycled, takes a lot of resources that are fairly expensive.  Reusing is definitely optimal.

One idea.  There's an organization in Philly that does a lot of nerdy DIY projects with stuff, often electronics.  I'm not sure if they'd want all the stuff, or any of it, but who knows.  Its called the Hacktory and their website i think is www.makephilly.com

wouldn't hurt to e-mail them.

See that's where you're wrong.  A lot of them, as i said before, export the recycling duties overseas to countries like china, costing them less, but drastically harming the environment via transportation methods and similtaneously exposing underpaid chinese laborers to horrendous conditions.  Some places, however, do this locally (somehow) and without slave labor as far as i know.  Since i'm lost as to if there are even better alternatives than that, i figured why not ask?

Edit:  Thanks Doug.  I'll do that at work tomorrow.

my friend matt's recently gotten into circuit-bending (example), so if there's anything that has any sort of sound effect/noise programmed into it, he might be interested
